Playoff Page #5

Synopsis: Playoff tells the story of legendary Israeli basketball coach Ralph Klein. He became a national hero, when he made Maccabi Tel Aviv into European Champions in the late Seventies, one of Israel's first great international sporting successes. But Max became a national traitor equally fast, when he then accepted the against-all-odds job of turning the totally hopeless West-German basketball team - of all people! - into European winners. Max always maintains that Germany - where he was born before the war - means nothing to him, and that training their national team is just another job on his path to NBA glory. But things aren't as simple as he refuses to speak German to the young players. The only person he seems to be able to relate to is a Turkish immigrant woman Deniz, and her cheeky teenage daughter Sema. Max just about falls in love with Deniz - and does succeed in reinventing the Germans as European champions. When he discovers what happened to his own family in the 1940s - it is no

just 1% of what Germany is spending

on apologizing to the whole world,

he still would be here.

- Crimes must be paid for, Thomas.

He was no criminal.

He was a soldier, a simple soldier

who fought and bled for this country

that forgot him

but remembered you.

Let's go.

Yes, sir.

Cheers!

Is that a 1926 Harwood automatic?

I never met anyone

who could identify it.

I've never met anyone wearing it.

Not since my father.

He used to collect old watches.

It was an addiction.

The Harwood automatic

was one of his favorites.

He was probably forced

to sell it, at the time.

But I collect new ones.

Have you seen the new digital Seiko?

It just came out.

All you have to do

is press one button,

and voila! It tells you the time

all over the world!

Has the gentleman made up his mind?

I'll take both.

Excellent choice.

If you come across

a Harwood automatic,

you can reach me here.

Fist!

Do it again.

Fist!

Do it again.

Dieter, switch with Thomas.

Thomas.

What are you waiting for?

Fist...

What's wrong with you?

- Why don't you pass better?

Do it again.

Fist.

Thomas is taking it hard.

If Dieter can do it, so can Thomas.

He just doesn't want to.

We can't afford to lose him.

Fist.

Good work, Dieter.

Fist.

You've reached the Stoller family.

Please leave a message

and we'll get back to you.

Blessed are you, Lord our God,

King of the universe

who has sanctified us with His

commandments and commanded us

to light the candles of Rosh Hashana.

Happy New Year!

A very happy

Jewish New Year!

Cheers!!!

Happy New Year!

What's wrong with you?

You're on top of the world and

you have a sour face. - Thanks.

Give him a drink.

Come on, Max.

Listen, I've been here

almost 15 years.

Quite a few Israelis

have passed here in my club.

There are several ways

of living here.

One:
Hate them

for what they did to us

and never stop seeking revenge.

Never forget!

And there is my way.

Having a good time

is my revenge.

Enjoy!

Have fun.

Yom Kippur is coming soon,

so you can repent then.

Shimi said you were sad.

Did he?

Hey, maybe some other time.

Can't sleep, huh?

If you can't sleep then maybe

you're in the wrong place.

Maybe you should go home.

I've got to turn

you and your boys into a team.

You said that already.

There's nothing like a captain

who believes in himself and his team.

If that's what brought you here, you

shouldn't have replaced me as playmaker.

It was a professional decision.

No. It was personal.

You're in my way.

You know what you are?

You're just another apology.

Just another attempt

to erase everything.

They send us a Holocaust survivor

in order to forget the past.

Can you see the paradox?
