Synopsis: Homer Smith, an unemployed construction worker heading out west, stops at a remote farm in the desert to get water when his car overheats. The farm is being worked by a group of East European Catholic nuns, headed by the strict Mother Maria, who believes that Homer has been sent by God to build a much-needed church in the desert...

He is best known for his work on the movies Around the World in 80 Days for which he jointly won an Academy Award in 1956, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Summer and Smoke, Lilies of the Field, and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?. He also worked as a writer on the radio shows Escape and Suspense, writing the scripts for some of their best episodes, most notably "Three Skeleton Key" and "The Present Tense", both of which starred Vincent Price.
