Hard game

Synopsis: I am excited to introduce my screenplay titled Hard Game , a dramatic scene that takes place in Jake's room, where he and his best friend David are playing NBA 2K. The atmosphere becomes tense as David becomes increasingly frustrated with Jake's success in the game, leading to a heated argument between the two friends. Jake accuses David of treating him and others poorly, and David apologizes, revealing that he has cancer and has been struggling with his emotions. Jake is shocked and hurt that David didn't tell him earlier, and David explains that he didn't want to burden Jake. The scene ends with both friends in tears, as they try to come to terms with the situation and repair their damaged friendship.

INT.JAKES ROOM-DAY

Jake and his best friend David are in the middle of a heated battle in NBA 2K.

DAVID:

There should be no f***ing way

you're allowed to do this

JAKE:

It's not my fault you're an ass

DAVID:

Not one day have you ever played

this well in your life

JAKE:

Maybe I've just been holding back

on you this whole time. Or maybe I just have a lucky streak going on. Who knows?

DAVID Nigga, please

JAKE:

Hey, man, I don't know why you're

getting upset. It's just a game

DAVID:

Ok and what's that supposed to mean

JAKE:

I'm just saying, don't get worked

up over it. We're still friends at the end of the day

DAVID:

Who the f*** do you think you are

telling me to calm down?

JAKE:

I'm not trying to disrespect you,

man. I just want us to have fun and enjoy the game. It's not worth getting pissed off over

Jake slams his controller on the table in frustration and stands up.

JAKE (CONT'D)

I don't need this disrespect. I am

so tired of your bullshit.

DAVID looks taken aback as Jake continues

JAKE (CONT'D)

F*** you. You treat me and everyone

around you likes absolute sh*t, and I'm done. We're not your f***ing doormat that you can just walk all over

Jake storms out of the room, leaving David sitting in stunned silence. He slowly puts his controller down and sinks into his chair, looking lost in thought.

INT.KITCHEN-DAY

Jake heads to the kitchen, grabs a beer from the fridge, and heads outside onto the patio to calm down. As he takes a deep breath and tries to collect his thoughts

INT.JAKES ROOM-DAY

David sits in silence, staring at the door, anxiously waiting for Jake's return. After a few moments, he stands up and begins to search the house for his friend.

INT. KITCHEN-DAY

David opens the patio door and steps outside, taking a deep breath before speaking

EXT.PATIO-DAY

DAVID Hey...

Jake does not respond

DAVID (CONT'D)

I know things got heated earlier,

and I want to apologize. I should never have spoken to you like that.

Jake remains silent

DAVID (CONT'D)

I understand if you can't forgive

me right away, but I am sorry. Lately, I've been dealing with a lot, and I let my emotions get the best of me.

2.

JAKE:

Do you think a stupid apology is

going to make me forget all the hurtful things you said?

David doesn't know how to respond

DAVID:

I understand that my words were

hurtful, but I want to make things right. Please, give me a chance to explain myself.

JAKE:

Bullshit... don't hit me with that

sh*t all your ass does is sat at home and do nothing every day and you seriously think I'm going to believe you

DAVID:

look Jake I don't expect you to

instantly forgive me but I do wish you could give me a chance to explain myself

JAKE:

Explain what? That you've been

sitting at home doing nothing while I've been working my ass off?

David looks down, ashamed.

DAVID:

I know it may seem that way, but

there's more to it than that. Please, just hear me out.

Jake takes a deep breath and considers David's words.

David hesitates and tears slowly start rolling down his face

I I'm...sick

DAVID (CONT'D) DAVID (CONT'D) JAKE

Are you telling me you got angry and pissed off because you got some cold

3.

DAVID:

I am sick but it's not a cold

JAKE:

Then what? did you wake up with a

fever or what man

DAVID:

I wish you would let me finish

David takes a big deep breath

DAVID (CONT'D) I have cancer

JOSH Wait...

DAVID:

I haven't been feeling well lately

so I went in for a check-up

JAKE:

What? Why didn't you tell me?

David looks down, unable to meet Jake's gaze.

DAVID:

I didn't want to burden you with

it. And then when we got into that argument, I didn't know how to tell you.

DAVID (CONT'D)

I'm sorry. I just didn't want to

change things between us.

JOSH:

How long have you known this?

David looks down and starts to play with his hands

David can't bring himself to look his best friend in his eyes

DAVID:

About a year ago...I didn't wanna

tell anyone

JAKE:

I'm not just anyone man I'm your

best friend... we've been through everything together.

4.

DAVID:

I know... I was just scared

JAKE So Ummm...

Tears slowly start rolling down jakes face

JAKE (CONT'D)

I'm gonna go ahead and assume

you're kicking this things ass like how kicked your ass in 2k today

David looks down and starts to fully cry

Jake gets up and slowly walks up to David and

JAKE (CONT'D) Please...please....please... tell

me you're winning

DAVID I really

JAKE:

NO...NO.... No f***ing way

DAVID:

I want to tell you that I'm winning

and I'm kicking this terrible disease's ass

JAKE:

That's what I'm talking about, man!

We're gonna get through this together. You're not alone in this fight.

DAVID:

I don't know if I'm winning. The

treatment has been tough, and they haven't been working. the doctors aren't sure how much longer I have

David shakes his head

DAVID (CONT'D) But...it's not looking good man...

the treatments haven't been working

DAVID (CONT'D)

Do you remember the pack we made in

8th grade

gives him a hug

5.

JAKE:

How could I forget

DAVID:

Just want you to know...I could not

have asked for a better best friend in life

DAVID (CONT'D) I love you man

JAKE How long?

6

DAVID:

JAKE Years

DAVID Months.

Jake hugs David again. They sit there in silence for a moment, holding each other.

Jake and David continue to hug for a few more moments, with tears streaming down both of their faces. After a few moments, Jake breaks the hug and looks David in the eyes

JAKE:

Listen, man. We're gonna get

through this together. I promise you that.

David nods his head, still wiping tears from his eyes.

JAKE (CONT'D)

I'm right here with you. Always

David manages a small smile as he and Jake head back inside, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

THE END:
