Fair Play Page #3

Synopsis: The 1980s in Czechoslovakia. The young talented sprinter Anna (Judit Bárdos) is selected for the national team and starts training to qualify for the Olympic Games. As a part of the preparation she is placed in a secret "medical programme" where she's getting doped with anabolic steroids. Her performance is getting better, but after she collapses at the training, she learns the truth about the drugs. Anna decides to continue in her training without the steroids even though her mother (Anna Geislerova) is worried that she won't be able to keep up with other athletes and might not qualify for the Olympics, which she sees as the only chance for her daughter to escape from behind the Iron Curtain. After Anna finishes the last in the indoor race, her mother informs the coach (Roman Luknar) that Anna is no longer using steroids. They decide to apply the steroids to Anna secretly, pretending it's nothing but doses of harmless vitamins.

Did you hear him well?

One injection in the morning, one in the evening.

- Where is Martina?

- At a sampling.

You actually shouldn't be aware of her coming here too.

See you tomorrow.

So you haven't seen your dad since he emigrated?

They never allowed me to go.

I mean to the West.

He's a biologist.

He goes to conferences all the time.

A little surprise.

What is it?

Just a moment.

- Now.

You can block the slot with a coin

and make a call even to the West.

Incredible, right?

- Do you have your das number?

- I do but... He might not be at home.

- Come on. This is a unique opportunity.

- We almost never call each other.

Don't you want to hear him?

Whas Christmas got to do with it?

Do you want to call him or not?

I don't know.

God, I thought it would make you happy.

I hope to see you some time.

How is your training going?

What are your results?

- So?

- You want to call again?

- No.

Speed up! Keep it up!

Anna, you're too low. Knees higher!

Are you dancing or running?

Martina, watch your shoulders!

Watch your arms, Anna!

Anna, you were running bent forward, work those knees!

- Straighten your back when running.

- Coach, I feel sick.

- I hope your boyfriend plays it safe.

- What?

I don't want some ruptured rubber to screw it all up.

- Les do this once again.

- Coach, is Christmas tomorrow.

- There's never anyone but us here.

- We said we'd train until tomorrow.

Then you'll have two days off.

How else can you reach the time limit?

In the line.

Go!

- What is this?

- Are you alright?

- ve never seen this before. What is it?

- I feel really sick.

What is this play-acting about? In a month

you're going to the indoor races.

- Go back in the line.

- I can't.

Well f*** off then and go home.

Come, Martina, les go. Once more.

Anna?

My God, whas wrong with you?

- Anna, talk to me.

- I feel so sick.

Mrs Moravcova!

- Good evening.

Your daughter is totally exhausted.

She said she's a top-level athlete,

looked after by a sports doctor.

But I don't get it.
