Love at the Shore Page #2

Synopsis: Successful and driven single mom Jenna Thompson writes teen novels, and she has only five weeks to deliver the next one to her publisher. So, this year's annual beach vacation with her kids Nick (Luke Loveless) and Ally (Reagan Shumate), will be a working vacation for Jenna. Upon arrival, the family soon meets their new next-door neighbor, confident, devil-may-care surfer Lucas McKinnon, with whom they will be sharing walls and a patio for the next month. Lucas cranks up his music at night, sleeps late, and allows Tank to run around at will. Jenna bangs away at her novel with little success, often blaming Lucas' loud volleyball matches and irregular hours for her inability to progress. However, after Lucas finds himself bonding with Nick and Ally, Jenna begins to see a different side of Lucas, and when the two find themselves alone together one evening for dinner, each begins to see the other in a whole new - and attractive - light. Yeah, a messy one, who probably

sleeps until 10:
00 every day.

Nah. What do I always

tell my students?

Middle school

is like Middle Earth?

That, and that you should always

follow the two-week rule.

Looking good, Nick.

So, what's the two-week rule?

Well, you should always

give it that long

before you decide

if you like someone or not.

I mean, otherwise,

it's a snap judgment.

-Yeah, I don't do that.

-Really?

What about Mr. Splenda?

Okay, he had a seriously

unhealthy addiction

to sweetener.

And the airplane guy?

He took his socks and shoes off

before we were airborne.

Besides, I wasn't dating them.

Which you can't keep avoiding.

I'm not avoiding it, I'm just...

Approaching it with a much more

critical eye this time around.

That sounds so romantic.

Either way, this is

a neighbor thing

and trust me,

he's totally Mr. Slack.

Okay, fine.

I'll give it two weeks.

Good.

What the... No, no, no, Tank.

No, no, no.

Come on, man.

Come... No, no,

not the book. Come on.

Let's go.

Time to go home.

-Hey.

-Hey.

I think this guy belongs to you.

What are you doing over there?

Get in here, you. Get in.

Either trying to play with,

or rearrange my book.

I don't know,

it's really hard to say.

Well, I always said

he'd make a great editor.

-No?

-No. Cute, but no.

Hey, one other quick thing

if you have a second.

Yeah, of course,

come on in. Come on in.

Come on, buddy, inside!

'Come on.'

So, I just wanted to ask

or, maybe suggest

we set some ground rules?

Yeah.

About what?

Well, the dog, for starters.

-You're not a dog person.

-No, I love dogs.

I mean, I like them,

my daughter loves them.

My ex-husband keeps

promising to get them one

'but I'm just too busy

to commit to a dog right now.'

'I mean, it just wouldn't be

fair to the little guy.'

Especially considering

I have this book deadline

and I'm not quite sure

how I'm gonna hit it.

You're a writer.

What do you write?

Like, novels or plays?

Teen fiction.

It's a lot harder

than it sounds.

Which is why I can't risk

any distractions right now.

So, I was hoping

you could keep Tank

on your side

of the fence, so to speak.

No can do.

What?

There is no fence.

It's a shared patio.

But... you know what I mean.

Also, I don't know

if you realize

but the walls are,

like, paper thin.

So, if you could keep

the music down past, say...

Look, Jenna, I really appreciate

you bringing Tank back

but, I live here

year around.

Right. You don't even

have any plants.

What's that got to do

with anything?

Never mind.

You were saying?

I get that you're gonna

be here for a month...

It's five weeks, actually.

Right. Either way,

I mean, I'll do my best
