I believe you have to have some belief in the Devine to watch and love this film like many that fall into this genre. Including Gregory Hoblit Direction the cinematography was before it’s time. Some which must have been tricky were made look easy by (Newton Thomas Sigel, who went on to create Bohemian Rhapsody, the exquisite portrait of Freddie Mercury) Newton Thomas Siegel was able to somehow give the audience this feeling that John Hobbes is constantly being followed by “something” not just the camera at critical junctures of the film. Turning out to be something evil. Which is yet another reason I specifically believe Fallen to be one of Denzel Washingtons finest performances.
Obviously a man with a great deal of faith himself it mustn’t of been too difficult for Denzel to place himself in the shoes of Hobbes and absolutely submerse himself in this carefully written screenplay. Interestingly enough the film originally went out to Arnold Schwarzenegger as he was seriously considered for the role of Hobbes. Nothing at all wrong with this decision. However the only other actor I personally would have considered for the role of John Hobbes would have been Eric Bana. Apparently Nicholas Kazan also specifically wrote the role of Jonesy with John Goodman in mind. We may be led to believe this casting call was indeed arranged by heaven because by the time all contracts were on the table it was just so extremely well cast. Including Embeth Davidtz (everyone’s favourite actress) cast in a wonderful supporting role as Greta Melano and from here on to portray Little Miss the following year in Bicentennial Man (1999). Not to ever omit the constant and current towering presence of actor Donald Sutherland making this film another one of his legendary contributions of 200 different shows and films in cinema. His role as L.t Stanton is more like the corner stone to the film Fallen with different critical juncture’s in the film upon every appearance. If your anything like me Fallen falls into the category of movies you have to convenient excuse your self to pause, get up and constantly make a pot of tea during films like this Deliver Us From Evil and The Pope’s Exorcist.
