The Engineer is about an electrical/mechanical engineer, Steve Mathew who was fired from his job. Steve (Jake Gyllenhaal) graduated top of his class at a U.S University. He is a meek and humble unassuming man and a brilliant electrical engineer and a math wizard. He learned AutoCAD in less than three days. While still studying, Steve invented a very useful electronic device for homes. He showed his prototype to his best friend Carlito (Matt Jones) who betrayed him and stole the prototype and sold it to a big firm in need of a new invention/s. Steve files a copyright infringement notice by submitting the blueprints of his work as evidence. Steve losses since he never made the effort to copyright his invention.
After graduation, Steve was accepted into a prestigious engineering firm specializing in high-voltage electrical projects. Being a new grad, his colleagues underestimated him at first but soon gains their respect. Six months into his new job. Steve is fired by William Lean (Toby Jones), the Project Manager, a bully leader who berates his subordinate during coordination meetings.
