Pulgasari

Synopsis: In feudal Korea, the evil King becomes aware that there is a peasant rebellion being planned in the country. He steals all the iron farming tools and cooking pots from the people so that he may make weapons to fend off the peasant army. After he returns the property to the people, an old blacksmith is imprisoned and starved to death. His last creation is a tiny figurine of a monster- Pulgasari, a Godzilla-like creature that eats iron. The blood of his daughter brings the creature to life, and fights with the poor, starving peasants to overthrow the corrupt monarchy.

Sister, some water.

Older people first.

Please rest a little, Father.

I'll rest after I finish this.

Leave it for later.

Well then, let's rest for a bit.

Sounds good to me.

Let me have some water.

Father.

Come here, quickly.

Inde is first, all right?

Hey.

Clean that up.

That. That!

What are you talking about?

In that bunch of grass.

I'm telling you to hurry and clean it up.

Yes.

Get out of my way.

Oh, my!

What's this?

Uncle.

Forgive me. A friend who went into the mountains asked me to hide them.

They just asked you, right?

You're trying to trick me, aren't you?

You would send a child into the mountains.

I already know you're the leader of the bandits.

Heartless wretch.

You'd walk out and leave your mother and younger brother.

Uncle.

Friends even poorer than me have gone into the mountains.

All right.

Get up.

I wanted you to marry my daughter and take over the forge.

What a horrible world.

Inde!

Ami!

Ami, why are you here?

Are you going into the mountains, too, Inde?

Then what about me?

You don't have to worry.

Next year, I'll come for you, all right?

No! I can't live apart from you.

Please understand, Ami.

Between the bad harvest and the governor,

everyone is about to die of starvation.

I can't just ignore that!

And everyone chose me as the leader.

Going already?

I'd like to get there quickly.

This may be our last goodbye.

What are you saying?

Take care!

Uncle. Uncle.

Eat this on the way.

Take it with you now.

Father, the governor!

What?

Let's hurry and go!

It's this house.

Hey, Takuse!

How can I help you?

He's from the government building.

Welcome.

He's the blacksmith.

There isn't any worker more skilled than him.

Listen well. Today, bandits have caused a ruckus at a certain location.

They're targeting the government storehouse.

We have to strengthen our armed forces.

Since you are so skilled, I'm here to commission you to make weapons.

This is an order from the government.

But there's no iron.

Don't worry. We've already finished the preparations.

But these are farming tools! Even a cooking pot!

A stable country is a requirement for farming.

This village is forfeit also.

This village too?

Of course.

That can't be...

We cannot live without these.

Please don't take it away. I beg of you.

Let go of it.

Let it go. As if I'd give it to you!

Hurry up!

The youths of this village are bandits. Seize them all.

Mother!

Mother!

Uncle.

What's wrong?

Inde's been taken!

Taken?

Really?

Tell me all the details.

He tried to get the farm tools back and...

Auntie.

What?

Father said to gather all the villagers and bring them to our house tonight.

To your house?

Hurry up and take it!

Uncle, is it alright to be doing this?

Now, you can do your farm work.

But...

But we can't live without farm tools.

Hide them until you don't have to worry any more.

But if I'm caught...

It's all right, so hurry.

Bring them over this way.

Tell us where you've hidden the iron!

When I woke up this morning, the iron was gone.

I bet Pulgasari did it.

There's no such thing as Pulgasari!

No more of your lies! Learn from your mistakes!

Hurry up and beat him!

Stubborn fool! Throw him into prison and don't give him any food!

Uncle!

Uncle!

It's awful!

Ami!

What should we do?

Uncle...

It seems he's been starving for days.

What did you say?

He can't even drink water!

It's time to eat! Hurry and wake up!

Don't get excited!

Eat.

I won't.

You're going to eat.

I won't.

Eat.

I won't.

I won't eat until he eats.

I'm not eating.

We won't either.

Have you lost your senses? Eat.

I won't.

Eat.

I won't.

You...

Are you trying to kill us?

I'll starve to death.

You.

Sister, hurry!

Guard, I beg of you. Please let me see my father.

I beg you, please.

No visitors.

Wait a moment.

I just want my father to eat, if only one mouthful.

I have my reasons too.

If I let you see him, I'll be killed.

Guard...

Please, somehow give this food to my father.

My father has been starving for days.

What will you do if someone sees?

Chase them away!

Guard...

My father is starving and he might die. Please help him!

You...

Father!

Father!

You...

Don't worry about me, just go home.

Sister, it's Father!

Father, please eat.

Sister...

Uncle, please eat and get well.

Hurry!

Uncle, what are you doing?

I've spent my life making tools for the farmers.

I hoped for happiness by working to be of some use to people,

but that was an unfulfilled dream.

If pity exists, then heaven help us please!

This world in which farmers starve miserably...

How can I abandon them?

In my life,

there was not a day that passed in which I did not create something.

Before I leave this world,

let me at least leave this.

Loyal Father.

Because I made you with the last of my true heart,

please save humanity in my place.

I pray to the gods of heaven and earth.

Please listen to this old man's last wish.

This last wish...

Uncle!

Loyal Father!

Father!

Ana, don't cry.

I'll mend this for you.

Oh, it's moving!

Ana, look! It's eating the needle.

It looks like it likes metal.

I guess so.

It's so cute.

Come over here.

Cute!

This is the last thing Father left us.

Look at it.

The door is open.

Where is he? Sister, he's not here!

Really?

Where could he be?

We'll find him.

He's not around.

Maybe he's outside?

I'll go look.

Little one!

Little one!
