Tiramisu Page #3

Synopsis: Bookkeeper Jacob newest client is the talented and flamboyant actress Anne. They first meet each other on her houseboat, the morning after the premiere of Anne's new theatrical play. Jacob soon discovers that Anne has made a mess of her personal finances and that she has several debts. She may even have to sell her houseboat. Anne gets into a blind panic as she definitely has no intention to sell the boat where she has so many memories. Jacob becomes fascinated about Anne's world and is not concerned anymore with his own personal life and wife. Anne is trying to get money and is convinced that Jacob can save her financial mess. Despite Anne's plans and efforts, the boat must be sold by auction. During the evening of the auction, Anne has organized a big good-bye dinner and has invited all her colleagues and friend on the boat. When Jacob is about to inform Anne about how he wants to save Anne's houseboat (he has bought it himself for her), she comes up with a totally different plan..

It's healed really well.

Yes?

You should come to dinner.

Masja would love it.

I will.

-Make sure you do.

Can I help you?

No, just looking.

Do you know her size?

I'm a 36 B,

which is rather common.

I see.

Don't answer. It's Fedor.

I don't understand why he

wants me to play Isabelle.

Because you turned down the other part?

-Which other part?

That supporting role?

-See what I mean?

Forget it. I'll call him later.

Let's go.

Purse.

And how do they feel?

-Comfortable.

But they're much too expensive...

-You need good shoes.

You have to walk miles in them.

Yes, but to spend so much money...

-Stop it, will you?

I've been calling you

the whole morning.

I had them put tickets aside at the

box-office. For tomorrow evening.

There's no postponement.

I spent an hour trying to persuade the

tax inspector. He was not convinced.

So what's going to happen now?

There'll be a public auction.

And if I manage to get the money?

-Well yes, perhaps then...

Shall we return the shoes?

-I have to get the money together.

Lex has money.

-How am I going to tell Masja?

This is simply not possible.

I'll get the money somehow.

Anne?

Nice that you called us.

Here's the text. Of course,

you haven't had time to prepare...

...but it's only two lines.

Must be possible, right?

Are those the only clothes

you have with you?

The text says a sweater

with a plunging neckline.

Oh, I had no idea.

I could pretend to wear a sweater.

Isn't that what actors are for?

I'll see if I having something

lying around. Just a minute.

And so she says:
I'm on

the VIP guest list, just ask Rick.

Exactly, yes.

Do you know split up?

Michiel and Rose.

Yes, really.

Hello, Veronica.

I believe we've never been

formally introduced. Anne.

Vanessa.

-Yes, naturally. Sorry.

You can't have too many principles,

at least that's what my agent says.

I didn't know you

also did commercials.

Yes. You have to keep up

with the times.

I'll see you tonight then?

We thought Scenes was quite good.

-Yes?

You and...

-Lex. Yes.

A comic piece actually, also if you

think more about it. All that fuss...

I think it's a bit old-fashioned.

And you're still acting in...

-Yes.

But this is my last season. I'm in need

of a challenge. Lex agrees too.

He's developing a new series,

so who knows...

This is taking forever, as usual.

Which role are you here for?

I thought there was only one role.

Young woman behind counter, right?

Vanessa...

-Well, success then.

Yes, you too, success.

PUBLIC AUCTION SALE

I have a fever.

I'm so thirsty.

I thought you were...

It's already the 17th day,

so we're too late anyway.

That's true.

Although, it also shouldn't be

that we only...

Paula van der Oest

Paula van der Oest (born 1965) is a Dutch film director and screenwriter. Her 2001 film Zus & Zo was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. With her final exam at the Dutch Film and Television Academy, Zinderend, she won a Cannon Award in 1988. In the following years, she worked as an assistant director, until she returned in 1994 as a director. For the VPRO-series Lolamoviola she made the short movies Coma and Achilles en het zebrapad (Achilles and the Zebracrossing). With the first, she won a Golden Calf for the best television drama. In 1996 Van der Oest made her first long movie, De nieuwe moeder (The New Mother). Her husband at the time, Theu Boermans, had a role in this movie (later, he would also have a role in Zus & Zo). De trip van Teetje (the journey of Teetje) was produced in 1998, with Cees Geel as a louche entrepreneur who buys a Russian cargo ship. With Zus & Zo, loosely based on Chekhov's The Three Sisters, Van der Oest directed her first mainstream film in 2001. The realistic characters and the relations among the individuals from her former movies remained central, but there was more humour added, and an English script doctor made some changes, resulting in an Oscar nomination. However, the general public left the movie unseen. Hereafter she created the English thriller/fairytale Moonlight (2002) about the relation between a 13-year-old girl and a balloon swallower of the same age; the film Madame Jeannette, situated in the Suriname-community (which was a great success in the Amsterdam Bijlmer area in 2004); and the film Verborgen gebreken (2004), based on a book by Renate Dorrestein. Moonlight was entered into the 25th Moscow International Film Festival. In 2001, she wrote the screenplay for Meral Uslu's telefilm Roos and Rana. Currently, Paula van der Oest is planning a second film about Suriname and she is working on a movie based on Heleen van Royen's De gelukkige huisvrouw (The Happy Homemaker). more…
