One Girl's Confession Page #3

Synopsis: Another of the "Fate and Irony" films from director-writer-producer-actor Hugo Haas but this one has less hair-shirt torment than most of his offerings, although his camera, as usual, lingers provocatively on the contours of the leading lady and, in this case, the leading lady is more than well-contoured. Mary Adams works in a tawdry waterfront restaurant where the owner not only maltreats her, he also cheated her father out of a fortune years ago. The owner acquires $25,000 in an illegal transaction, which Mary promptly steals, hides, confesses her crime and serves a short sentence. Freed, she goes to work in a restaurant owned by Dragomie Damitrod, and when he gets into trouble over a gambling debt, she offers to help him by telling him where the $25,000 is hidden, and will loan him what he needs. But circumstances indicate he has stolen all of the money, so she clouts him on the head, killing him. She then learns he didn't steal the money, digs it up and donates it to an orphanage,

So, you intend to return

to the place of your...

Crime? Sure,

I have some unfinished business here.

And then I want to go away

and start a new life.

They want to get my dough!

I can wait.

Hey, that was nice! Do it again!

Looking for somebody?

Yeah. Wasn't there a little joint around here?

I mean, a restaurant a couple of years ago?

You mean... Sure, that's gone. Condemned.

-It was full of water rats.

-And human rats, too!

Well, I had a girlfriend working there.

Can you tell me what happened

to the old man that ran the place?

Old Gregory? The cops gave him

a headache, so he took a powder.

They say he's operating somewhere

in South America now.

Thanks.

Quite a dish, huh?

Want to see the boss?

Yeah.

You've got to wait a while,

after he finishes the hand.

-Who is it?

-Okay, go ahead.

Boss, a beauty to see you!

-Come for the job?

-Yeah, sure. Is it still available?

It depends.

-Got any experience?

-I've worked as a waitress before.

Yeah? Look how you bent the cards.

Why do you do it?

-Where did you work?

-Various places out of town.

-Drugstores, drive-ins.

-Got any recommendations?

-Just my calluses.

-That's not enough.

A good waitress must have

in the first place...

Yeah! It's exactly what I mean.

Come, sit down. Sit down.

Don't play tough, sit down.

-What are you going to drink?

-Nothing, thank you.

No, don't give me that. What shall I order?

-Root beer.

-She says it with a straight face!

Look, that's mine. You deal. Take it.

Take it, it's for good luck.

Buy yourself a nice dress

to impress my customers.

-You mean I've got the job?

-If we agree on terms, why not?

Wait, I'll be right back, now.

Let's go to my office.

If everything's all right,

then we can start right away.

Come, let's go.

Wait!

If you want that lucky money,

I left it on your desk!

Why are you staring?

Can't I have a little privacy?

Say, do you know you're the first girl

who ever dared to slap me?

Someone should have done it

a long time ago.

You've probably met the other type of girls,

so maybe it isn't your fault anyway!

Wait!

What now, spoiled baby?

Isn't she a darling? I like you.

You're a brave girl.

You'll make a good waitress,

and a good bouncer, too, huh?

Sit down. You've got the job.

And if anybody ever dares to touch you,

including me, I'll break his neck!

You order.

Root beer for everybody!

Hi.

-Hello, boys!

-Hi!

Hey, Bill, mix me a Manhattan, will you?

I talked to Frank. Says he might let me

sing in his club when the girl has a day off.

That's good.

Darling, please give me another one.

And a cigar, please.

-Who's she?

-The new lady-in-waiting.

-Who hired her?
