Philip Baker Hall (born September 10, 1931) is an American actor. In film, Hall is known as both a leading man and a character actor earning critical acclaim in the lead roles of Richard Nixon in Robert Altman's Secret Honor (1984), and Sydney Brown in Paul Thomas Anderson's Hard Eight (1996). Hall has received Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his work in two other Anderson-directed films, Boogie Nights (1997) and Magnolia (1999). Hall has also appeared in Martin Brest's Midnight Run (1988), Cameron Crowe's Say Anything (1989), Peter Weir's The Truman Show (1998), Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Michael Mann's The Insider (1999), Lars Von Trier's Dogville (2005), David Fincher's Zodiac (2007), and Ben Affleck's Argo (2012). On television, he is best known for playing Lt. Bookman in the Seinfeld episode The Library. He also had recurring roles in Murder, She Wrote, The West Wing, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Modern Family, The Newsroom, BoJack Horseman, and Room 104.
