Gemma nods, reassured, as Sam hugs her. He whispersreassuringly in her ear -
SAM (CONT’D)
This is just like her, isn’t it?
She’s never been one to make our
lives easy, has she?
But we can see in his eyes - he’s not as confident as he’smaking out. He’s worried.
Back with YOUNG ALICE, CLOSE IN on her eyes as they flickeropen. She looks groggy and confused. Like she’s beendrugged. It takes a while for her to focus on hersurroundings, but slowly we come to see she’s in a dark,
grubby basement. The only light comes from underneath adoor, at the top of a flight of decrepit stairs.
The feeling of terror grows as Alice realises what’s
happened. She tries to stand, but the drugs are still in hersystem, and she stumbles, falling back to the ground. Shefeels a hand on hers and whimpers, scared, turning
-to see another GIRL. The same age. A similar look, butpale, and tired, and dead-eyed. She tries to smilereassuringly. To make Alice feel better. But the sight onlyterrifies Alice further. As if she’s looking right at herown fate. Just as she’s about to let out a scream we HARD

Outside the familiar cottage, JULIEN is staring at hisbeehive, sombre. And then he lifts an axe and brings it downwith an almighty blow. Each swing rips into the structureand sends shards of wood flying off it. Over this we hear
JULIEN (V.O.)

The sad truth is that such
matters rarely end with allthe loose parts tied upneatly, in a bow. The OliverHughes case was no different.

On-screen, JULIEN is being interviewed for a documentary.

The boy died. But theknowledge will not give hisparents respite. It willcontinue to follow them.
This, simply, is theunforgiving nature oftragedy. It is in its verybones...
